-
- 1.1.0 GENERAL INFORMATION
- -------------------
- This game is for managing an office football pool.
- Football Fun (FFUN) was designed expressly for the
- IBM-PC. A complete football schedule for the entire
- current season is included in a data file on the FFUN
- disk. This saves the operator the drudgery of keying in
- the team names every week when preparing the weekly
- selection sheets. The program is very easy to operate.
- It takes 11 keystrokes to produce a weekly selection
- sheet.
-
- The selection sheet contains rules for playing the
- game. The rules are simple and encourage non-football
- experts to participate in the game. The object is to
- pick the most winners of the weekly pro games. Point
- spreads are optional. In the event of ties, each
- contestant enters the total number of points they think
- will be scored in the Monday night game and whoever is
- closest to the actual points scored is the winner.
-
- If you prefer you may use the point spread between the
- winning team score and the losing team score. The tie-
- breaker points entered with the Monday night team
- winner will be the actual point difference in the game.
- If the score was 31 to 17 then the point total entered
- for the Monday night game will be 14.
-
- Entering each contestants selections has been simplified by
- a data entry screen designed expressly for this
- purpose. Using the 10 key numeric pad on the keyboard,
- it is easy to enter 2 players a minute. Groups of
- selection sheets may also be entered at different
- times. Each contestant is stored on disk when operator is
- satisfied that entry is correct, so that in the event
- of a power failure, no work is lost accept for the
- current contestant being entered on the screen. After all
- contestants are entered the operator may produce a list of
- this weeks selections. This report shows the time and
- date and can be used to verify that no selections were
- changed after the games were played.
-
- Up to 400 players can be handled by FFUN.
- A preliminary report will be printed after Sunday games
- are played. Operator keys in the numbers of winning
- teams from Sunday games and FFUN counts number of games
- each contestant picked right and prints report showing all
- contestants in order of number of games right.
-
- Next week's selection sheet maybe printed after Sunday
- report is printed. The name of this week's winner can be
- placed on selection sheet so you may have to wait until
- after the Monday report has been printed to know who the
- winner is.
-
- Football Fun Page 2.
- ========================================================
-
- A Monday report must be printed after the Monday night
- game is played. Key in the winning team number and the
- total points scored in the game. FFUN then prints report
- showing all contestants in order by
-
- 1. Most games won.
- 2. Smallest point difference.
-
-
- Contestant at top of report is the winner unless he is tied
- on games won and point difference. In that case the pot is
- split among the winners.
-
- The Monday report must be printed because it causes all
- contestants for this week to be erased so they do not get
- mixed in with next week's contestants. It also prepares a
- datafile which is used to update the seasonal database.
-
- The seasonal database is used to accumulate all the
- weekly results and produces a weekly season-to-date
- report showing the standings of all contestants. The
- contestant names stored in the seasonal database are used
- when entering each contestant's selections every week
- and saves the operator the trouble of typing the names.
-
-
-
-
- **************************

- 1.4.4 Print Selection Sheets for Future Weeks.
-
- A new menu item,
-
- 4. Print future week selection sheet.
-
- on the utility menu will now allow you to print sheets
- for weeks which are not the next week. This is needed
- for people who will not be around the office for the
- future weeks but want the sheets so they can mail them in.
- Do not use the menu item,
-
- 1. Print selection sheet for next week.
-
- in order to give them future weeks selection sheets, as
- this will mess up the team names which appear on the Sunday
- and Monday reports.
-
- 1.4.5 PRINT EXTRA COPY OF SELECTION SHEET.
-
- If you assigned points, the points are stored in the
- computer along with the team names and will appear on any
- extra sheets you print. Use item 1. on the Utility Menu
- to print as many selection sheets as you need.
-
- 1.5.0 ENTERING PLAYERS SELECTIONS.
-
- You must enter all contestants into computer before games
- are played. Use item 2. on Weekly Menu to bring up the
- contestant selection data entry screen.
-
- If you have names stored in the seasonal database the
- computer will place those names in the name box.
- The reason for this is that the names in the weekly pool
- must match the names in the seasonal database exactly in
- order for the computer to update the seasonal database
- correctly.
-
- The first name in the seasonal database will be placed in
- the players name box and the cursor will jump to the lower
- box for entering the team numbers. You will see the
- following box in upper right hand corner of the screen.
-
-
- Football Fun Page 9.
- ========================================================
- Scroll Names.
- ┌─────────────────┐
- │ = Backward │
- │ = Forward │
- │ Home = 1st Name │
- │ End = Last Name│
- └─────────────────┘
- You may move to another player's name using the up or down
- arrow keys. Or you may move to first or last player's
- name using the Home or End keys. Keep in mind that the
- names are stored in the seasonal database in alphabetical
- order by last name. Players with only one name are stored
- before players with a first and last name.
-
- As you skip around in the player's names, if you come to
- one which you have already entered, the program will skip
- over it and you will not see it again.
-
- After you are through entering players from the seasonal
- database, you can enter new players. The cursor will stop
- in the player's name box waiting for you to type in any
- new players. The Scroll Names box shown above will no
- longer be on the screen.
-
- If you are through with the player's names in the seasonal
- database, but there are still some appearing in the name
- box and you do not have selection sheets for them, you can
- use the F5 key to skip all the names in the seasonal database.
- Then the name box will be cleared and you can enter new names.
-
- If all the contestants in the seasonal database are not
- participating in a seasonal pool, but some are, then the
- contestants who are must have an asterisk (*) placed in
- front of their first names, like:
- *JOHN SMITH
- and you will be able to print a seasonal report with
- either all players or with just the * players.

-
- When you get to "TOTAL MONDAY POINTS" box you must

- It also makes a file with this weeks results to be used
- to add to seasonal database.
-
- If you do not produce the Monday report then next weeks

- 1.11.0 FOOTBALL SCHEDULE FOR NEXT YEAR.
- -------------------------------
-
- The original FFUN disk you received contained the pro
- football schedule for the current season. The program
- cannot operate for the following season without the new
- pro football schedule.
-
- We will prepare a file each year with the
- new schedule for the coming season and make it
- available to the users of Football Fun game any time
- after July 1. Improvements to FFUN will also be included
- at no additional charge.
-
- Item 5 on the Utility Menu is an order form for the new
- football schedule. It will display on your screen and
- you may print it by holding shift key down and
- pressing PrtSc key. Fill out the order form and mail
- it in with your check or money order. We will
- send you a floppy disk with the current pro football
- schedule. If you need a 3.5" floppy disk, please
- indicate on the order form.
-
- 1.12.0 CUSTOMIZE THE WEEKLY SELECTION SHEET.
- -------------------------------------
-
- The user now has an option to describe the rules for

- the UTILITY MENU,
-
- 8. Customize the Weekly Selection Sheet.
-
- Football Fun Page 17.
- ========================================================
-
- and the program will prompt you for the heading lines to
- be used on the selection sheet if you do not already have
- the custom file 'FBHEADER'. There are 6 lines in the
- heading, 1 line below the line which reads,
- TOTAL POINTS IN GAME 27-28 ( )
- and a line below the NAME line at the bottom of the sheet.
- Also a 9th line containing a T or P to indicate tiebreaker
- Total Points or Point Spread.
- These 9 lines will be stored in a data file called
- 'FBHEADER'. If this file exists, then the program will use
- the lines found in the file to create the selection sheet.
-
- If a custom file 'FBHEADER' already exists then the user may
- change only selected lines. The computer will show user each
- line and if he wants to change it, he simply types in the new
- line. If he does not want to change it he presses the Enter
- key the next line will be displayed. If he makes a mistake
- he can cancel the whole process and return to Utility Menu by
- pressing the Esc key.
-
- TIE BREAKER POINTS.
-
- Some users prefer to use the point spread of the Monday night
- game as the tie breaker. The selection sheet can now be
- printed so that it will show 'POINT SPREAD' instead of 'TOTAL
- POINTS'. This is done at the time the user is setting up the
- customized selection sheet. Put P or T in last line of
- 'FBHEADER' to indicate 'POINT SPREAD' OR 'TOTAL POINTS'.
- The program will prompt user for a 'P' or 'T' when creating
- the 'FBHEADER' file.
-
- Here is an example of what the 'FBHEADER' file might
- look like:
-
-
- .PICK TEAMS YOU THINK WILL WIN. MOST GAMES PICKED RIGHT WINS.
- .IN THE EVENT OF TIES, TOTAL POINTS SCORED IN MONDAY NIGHT GAME
- .WILL BE USED AS TIE-BREAKER.
- .FILL IN AND TEAR OFF BOTTOM STUB AND TURN IT IN TO FRANK IN
- .ENGINEERING BY FRIDAY AFTERNOON (OFF HOURS ONLY PLEASE).

- !WEEKLY & SEASONAL REPORTS WILL BE POSTED ON LUNCHROOM BULLETIN BOARDS.
- %IF YOU DO NOT CIRCLE A GAME YOU WILL BE GIVEN THE HOME TEAM (ODD NO.).
- T
- If next weeks games have a Thursday game you may want
- to give the contestants some special instructions on the
- selection sheet. Use the FBHEADER file to tell your
- people what you want them to know.

- 2.0.0 SEASONAL DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
- 2.1.0 Purpose
-
- The seasonal database was developed at the request
- of users of the Football Fun Game. It is for
- accumulating the results of the weekly football pool.
- Each week after the results have been printed for the
- office pool, the pool coordinator can cause the current
- weeks results to be added to the seasonal database and a
- report can be printed showing how many games each
- contestant has won for the entire season-to-date.
-
- It may be used to conduct a pool for the whole season.
- It also accumulates the total point differences which
- show up on the weekly final report. These points can be
- used to break ties on the seasonal report. The report is
- sorted by most games won and least point differences.
-
- New players who are not stored in the seasonal database
- may still participate in the weekly pool. They will be
- added to the seasonal database when this weeks results
- are accumulated.
-
- Some players stored in the seasonal database may not want
- to participate in a season pool. If you place an
- asterisk '*' in front of the first name of all players
- who are competing in the seasonal database, then you may
- have the competing and non-competing players mixed
- together and still be able to print a report showing only
- the competing players. A player who is competing in the
- seasonal pool will have a name like,
-
- *JOHN SMITH

- correct winning teams. Then you could add the corrected
- data to the database.
-
-
- 2.7.0 Add Current Week Results To Database.
-
- This is the item you use to accumulate the weekly data.
- After running the final report in the weekly pool you

-
- 2.8.0 Operating On Serial Printer.
-
- If you have a serial printer instead of a parallel printer
- you must tell DOS to switch the printer output to the
- serial port (COM1:) instead of the parallel port (LPT1:).
- You do this by typing the following commands at the DOS
- prompt:
-
- MODE COM1:96,N,8,1,P
- MODE LPT1=COM1
-
- the 96 in the first MODE command means that your printer
- is set to receive data from the computer at 9600 baud. If
- your serial printer is set at some other baud rate, like
- 2400, then you should substitute 24 for the 96 in the MODE
- command. The 2 Mode commands assume that your printer is
- connected to COM1. If it is connected to COM2 then you
- should substitute COM2 for the COM1 in both MODE commands.
-
- These 2 commands can be placed in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
- These commands must be executed before you type FFUN to
- start the program.
